Linguistics and Literary Studies
Research is a strong area of focus in each of the academic disciplines in our Linguistics and Literary Studies programme. The most influential of our research publications is the journal, Germanistische Linguistik (German Linguistics, only available in German), a co-publication with the Research Center Deutscher Sprachatlas. First published in 1969, the journal has successively expanded over the years. It now includes prominent series such as Deutsche Dialektgeographie (German Dialect Geography), Kleine und Regionale Sprachen (Minor and Regional Languages) and Thema Deutsch (Topics in German).
Scholarly Works and Projects
Of particular significance is the discipline German Studies, which hosts the research project on Jeremias Gotthelf, a prominent Swiss novelist from the 19th century. The project, a compilation of his letters and writings as a historical-critical edition, counts as one of the most important in contemporary scholarly research. It is slated for completion in 2040 and shall comprise a grand total of 70 volumes.
Editorial Collections
The Complete Scholarly Edition of Jeremias Gotthelf’s Works and Correspondence Letters and Writings (historical-critical edition)
One of the largest and most significant research projects of late is the compilation of the works and letters of 19th-century novelist, Jeremias Gotthelf. The project aims to fill a research gap by publishing a historical-critical edition of Gotthelf’s complete works and is being run by Prof. Dr. Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer and Prof. Dr. Christian von Zimmermann from the Jeremias Gotthelf Research Center at the University of Bern. The collection shall be split into seven sections and comprise seventy volumes. It is slated for completion in 2040.
Journals
German Linguistics (GL)
A co-publication with the Research Center Deutscher Sprachatlas since 1969, the triannual GL has become an authoritative voice in the field of Linguistics, opening up doorways to pivotal questions and inspiring critical thinking. Each issue deals with a different topic and is helmed by a changing editorial board. Articles are peer-reviewed and published in both German and English.
Book Series
We are proud to be home to other such prominent series as Germanistische Texte und Studien (German Texts and Studies), with over a hundred monographs, anthologies and collections on German literary history; Literatur – Wissen – Poetik (Literature – Knowledge – Poetry), a comparative literature series; and the Kamenzer Lessing-Studien (Kamenz Lessing Studies). Aside from German Studies, our programme also includes the disciplines Romance and Hispanic Studies and Slavic Studies.
Book Series
Deutsche Dialektgeographie (DDG)
Die Buchreihe Deutsche Dialektgeographie (DDG) wurde 1908 durch den Marburger Dialektologen Ferdinand Wrede begründet. Insofern ist die DDG eine der traditionsreichsten Buchreihen des Fachs. Sie kann jedoch nicht nur auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken, sondern ist heute ein aktives Forum der aktuellen Regionalsprachenforschung. Die DDG versteht sich als anspruchsvolles Publikationsmedium für hochrangige wissenschaftliche Arbeiten aus dem gesamten Feld der Regionalsprachenforschung. Seit Band 111 erscheint die DDG unter der verlegerischen Betreuung des Georg Olms Verlags.
Deutsche Namensforschung auf sprachgeschichtlicher Grundlage
Die Buchreihe wird gefördert von der „Henning-Kaufmann-Stiftung zur Förderung der deutschen Namenforschung auf sprachgeschichtlicher Grundlage“, die neben dem „Deutschen Sprachpreis“ für besondere Verdienste im Bereich der deutschen Sprache auch Preise an Wissenschaftler/-innen vergibt, die sich auf dem Gebiet der Namenforschung besonders hervorgetan haben. Die einzelnen themengebundenen Bände dokumentieren die Erträge von mehreren aufeinanderfolgenden Preisverleihungen und enthalten grundlegende Forschungsbeiträge zu zentralen Themen dieses Forschungsgebiets.
Echo
In der Reihe Echo erscheinen Studien, die literaturwissenschaftlich ausgerichtet, aber auf den Dialog mit anderen Disziplinen hin angelegt sind. Schon der Entstehungsprozess und die Rezeptionsgeschichte literarischer Werke beweisen, dass für diese keine politischen und sprachlichen Grenzen existieren. Die Konzeption der Reihe ist durch Offenheit geprägt; sie verschreibt sich nicht bestimmten Schulen oder Methoden und folgt einem Konzept von Literatur als „offenem Kunstwerk“.
Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué – Werke
Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (1777-1843) gehörte zu den gefeiertsten Dichtern der deutschen Romantik, der mit dieser großen, inzwischen abgeschlossenen Reprint-Werkausgabe die überfällige wissenschaftliche Wertschätzung erfährt. In Abteilung I werden „Sämtliche Romane und Novellenbücher“ neu ediert und teilweise umfangreich kommentiert, während der Schwerpunkt in Abteilung II auf „Ausgewählten Dramen und Epen“ liegt, darunter viele im Original schwer zugängliche Texte, die durch die Klarheit und Eleganz der Sprache bestechen.
Germanistische Linguistik – Monographien
Die inzwischen eingestellte Schriftenreihe Germanistische Linguistik – Monographien (GLM) wurde konzipiert als ergänzender Publikationsort zur weiterhin aktiven und bedeutenden Zeitschrift Germanistische Linguistik. Während in der Zeitschrift bis heute vor allem Sammelbände zu Grundsatzfragen der Sprachwissenschaft aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln veröffentlicht werden, fokussierte die GLM in Einzelstudien und Qualifikationsarbeiten zentrale Themen des Fachs von der Idiomatik über die Valenzanalyse bis hin zum Sprachgebrauch oder die Analyse von Behörden- und Pressetexten.
Germanistische Texte und Studien
In der Verlagsreihe „Germanistische Texte und Studien“ sind seit 1975 über einhundert maßgebliche Monographien, Sammelbände und Editionen zur deutschen Literaturgeschichte von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart erschienen, darunter Veröffentlichungen über Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin, Heine, Musil, Kafka, Celan, Grass oder Jelinek. Zu den Autoren der Reihe zählen in jüngerer Vergangenheit namhafte Fachvertreter wie Wolfgang Mieder, Lothar Pikulik, Bernhard Böschenstein oder Dirk Niefanger.
Kamenzer Lessing-Studien
Das Lessing-Museum in Kamenz, dem Geburtsort des Schriftstellers, ist das einzige dem großen deutschen Schriftsteller gewidmete Museum weltweit. Die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum entwickelte Schriftenreihe versammelt Tagungsbände zu aktuellen Themen der Lessing-Rezeption, nimmt aber auch sein Umfeld und die Epoche der Aufklärung allgemein in den Blick.
Kleine und Regionale Sprachen (KURS)
Kleine und regionale Sprachen sind historisch durch ihre wechselnden Einflussbereiche und durch ihre spezifische Existenz neben standardisierten Sprachformen geprägt. Die „KURS“-Reihe des „Zentrums für kleine und regionale Sprachen“ an der Europa-Universität Flensburg steht Monographien und Sammelbänden offen, die sich dem genannten Themenfeld aus gegenwärtiger oder historischer Perspektive widmen und linguistische, literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche sowie medienwissenschaftliche Zugänge zu den jeweils untersuchten Sprachformen wählen.
Literatur – Wissen – Poetik
Diese genuin komparatistisch und interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Schriftenreihe widmet den ästhetischen Dimensionen wissenschaftlicher Darstellungsverfahren in Literatur und Kunst ihre besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei die Form des Buchs als vielfältig gestaltbares Trägermedium von Wissen. Insgesamt eröffnet das Themenfeld Literatur, Wissen und Poetik dabei neue Perspektiven auf die Beziehungen der Künste untereinander.

Transdisziplinäre Kulturperspektiven – Transdisciplinary Cultural Perspectives – Perspectives Culturelles Transdisciplinaires
Starting from a transdisciplinary perspective, the series Passages – Transdisciplinary Cultural Perspectives is devoted to various topics from the fields of literature, theatre, film, anthropology, media and gender, with special reference to English- and French-speaking cultural spheres. In it are published works with an approach based on cultural theory and taken from cultural and literature studies/literary theory, theatre studies as well as outstanding dissertation/post-doctoral projects. Passages focuses on studying cultural and scientific processes at interfaces, places in which new scientific paradigma and a variety of cultural worlds arise. The moment of crossing, passing through and oscillating is determined by an epistemological attitude of reorganizing life, science and the world. Thus, on the one hand, Passages includes the transcending of the traditional disciplines and the networking of different sciences and fields of knowledge; on the other hand, it includes the passing through of cultural networks and problems which oscillate between cultural localization and the transcending of cultural boundaries. Passages is devoted to hybridization processes of various types, as they are for example to be found in French- and English-speaking cultures, the Caribbean, the Maghreb or the Latino culture in the USA. Especially here, the pressing questions of our time can be treated on the basis of numerous works by intellectuals, artists, thinkers and film-makers which are unequalled in the international cultural universe.
La nouvelle collection Passages – Perspectives culturelles transdisciplinaires se concentre – à partir d’un point de vue théorique transdisciplinaire – sur l’analyse de divers thèmes dans les domaines de la littérature, du théâtre, de l’anthropologie, des médias et des gender studies, en se référant essentiellement aux cultures anglophone et francophone. Des travaux monographiques spécialisés ainsi que des thèses de doctorat et des projets (par ex. “Postdoc”) de grande qualité, s’orientant en particulier vers la théorie culturelle, seront publiés dans cette collection. Passages met au centre des points d’intersection, ces lieux où se forment des nouveaux paradigmes scientifiques et une diversité des mondes culturels, l’analyse des processus culturels et scientifiques. Le moment du passage, de la traversée et de l’oscillation est déterminé par une nouvelle conscience épistémologique organisatrice du monde, de la vie et des sciences. Passages implique, d’une part, la transgression consciente des disciplines traditionnelles et l’interrelation des domaines différents du savoir et des sciences ; d’autre part, le parcours des entrelacements des réseaux culturels et des problèmes scientifiques qui oscillent entre localisation et dé-localisation culturelles. Passages se consacre aux différents processus d’hybridation provenant notamment des cultures francophones et anglophones, des Antilles, du Maghreb ou de la culture Latino aux États-Unis. En partant des divers travaux des intellectuels, des artistes, des philosophes, des réalisateurs de film qui sont uniques dans le paysage culturel international, il est possible d’analyser les problèmes pressants de l’actualité.
Paul Heyse – Werke
Der deutsche Schriftsteller, Dramatiker und Übersetzer Paul Heyse (1830–1914) wurde als erster deutscher Autor belletristischer Werke 1910 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Diese bislang größte Ausgabe seiner Werke lädt zur Wiederentdeckung mit dem zu Unrecht Vergessenen ein. Mit Ausnahme der ungedruckten Dramen und Tagebücher enthält sie in fünf Reihen mit insgesamt 30 Bänden alle auffindbaren Romane, Novellen, Dramen, Gedichte, Übersetzungen und Essays von Heyse, die zudem durch umfangreiche Register erschlossen werden.
Studien zur Sprachwissenschaft
Die thematisch offene Reihe Studien zur Sprachwissenschaft versammelt wissenschaftliche Qualifikationsarbeiten, Monographien und Sammelbände aus allen Teildisziplinen dieses Fachgebiets und widmet sich insbesondere Forschungsfeldern außerhalb der germanistischen Linguistik. Entsprechend sind fremdsprachige Publikationen möglich und erwünscht.
Thema Deutsch
Die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache e.V. (Wiesbaden) herausgegebene Buchreihe erscheint ab Band 13 im Georg Olms Verlag. Alljährlich kürt die GfdS unter großem Medieninteresse das „Wort des Jahres“ und benennt bis zu zehn weitere Wörter, die das jeweilige Jahr in besonderer Weise geprägt haben. Entsprechend widmete sich einer der beiden bisher erschienenen Titel der Reihe Thema Deutsch genau diesem Phänomen und ermöglichte so einen Streifzug durch 40 Jahre deutscher Zeitgeschichte. Weitere Bände zu vergleichbaren aktuellen Themen sind in Vorbereitung.

Untersuchungen zu den kulturellen Zeichen (Semiotik – Epistemologie – Interpretation)
The TCCL publishes books about Latin American and Spain as well as about Brazilian and Portuguese Culture and Literature of different centuries and countries. The main focus lies in the investigation of Borges, Postmodernity, Postcoloniality, Hybridity, Gender, on the relationship between Literature and Historiography, Sciences and Media, on the Interpretation of the Chronicles of the Conquest, on Colonization and Travels, on Narratology and Theory. Other important fields are border culture, rethinking the Americas, Transmediality, Body and Sexuality, Chicano-Culture, Frida Kahlo, Brazilian concepts of Identity and Nation, Caribbean Literature and Culture as well Spanish discourses of the 18. Century. The TCCL promotes especially works with a historical and theoretical orientation.
En la colección TCCL se publican trabajos sobre cultura y literatura latinoamericana, española, portuguesa y brasileña de diversas épocas y países, pero con especial atención a los siglo XX y XXI. Focos especiales de la colección son investigaciones sobre Borges, postmodernidad, postcolonialidad, hibridez, género, sobre la relación literatura e historiografía, ciencia y medios de comunicación, sobre las crónicas de la conquista, de la colonización y de viajes, sobre narratología teoría. Otros campos son la border culture (Rethinking the Americas), transmedialidad, sexualidad y cuerpo, cultura y literatura chicana, sobre Frida Kahlo y conceptos de identidad y nación en Brasil, sobre le Caribe y discursos en el siglo XVIII. La colección profesa un particular interés por trabajos de orientación histórica, cultural y teórica.

Les thèmes principaux abordés dans la collection TCCL se concentrent sur les recherches sur Borges, la postmodernité, le postcolonialisme, l’hybridité, Gender, le rapport entre la littérature et l’écriture de l’histoire, la littérature et les sciences, la littérature et les médias, l’interprétation des chroniques, la narrativité et la théorisation ainsi que la border culture et le rethinking the Americas, la transmédialité, la sexualité et le corps, la culture-chicano, l’Espagne au XVIIIème siècle, Frida Kahlo, les concepts brésiliens d’identité et de nation, les récits portugais de voyage de découvertes, les Caraïbes francophone, anglophone et hispanophone. La collection s’est surtout fixé comme objectif des travaux se consacrant à l’histoire, aux sciences de la culture et à la théorie.

The international, peer-reviewed Theory and Practice of Theatre. Performance and Visual Arts.
Hispanophone and Lusophone Studies (TPTPVA) series has been successfully published in
several languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and French) since
1990. With its transdisciplinary, transcultural, and transmedial approach in the field of Latin
American, Spanish, Portuguese, and Brazilian Studies, TPTPVA publishes monographs and
anthologies in the main areas of the discipline aimed at both an academic and a culturally
interested readership. In addition, the series traditionally promotes young academics on the
basis of outstanding and innovative doctoral and post-doctoral theses.
The focus is on questions of theory formation as well as historical and current issues, with a
particular focus on the 20th and 21st centuries, including topics such as the body, sexuality,
objects, staging, society, historicisation, postmodern and postcolonial theatre (Cuti movement),
performance, transmediality, hybridisation, gender, queer culture, chicano culture, teatro de la
memoria, cybor and installation art. The connection to the public-political-social space in
interaction with science, philosophy, cultural studies and media in general is also important.
The TPTPVA series is supported by a team of internationally renowned scholars, reflecting the
scope of the discipline as well as the variety of theories and topics, while ensuring the high
quality standards of the series.
La colección international peer reviewed, Teoría y Práctica del Teatro. Performance y Artes
Visuales. Estudios Hispanófonos y Lusófonos (TPTPAV) publicada exitosamente desde 1990
en diversas lenguas (español, alemán, inglés, francés, italiano y portugués), tiene un enfoque
transdisciplinario, transcultural y transmedial. Con sus monografías y antologías sobre un
amplio abanico de temas en el campo del teatro y el espectáculo latinoamericanos, españoles,
portugueses y brasileños, así como de los estudios sobre artes visuales, se dirige tanto a un
público académico como a un público interesado por la cultura. Además, la serie promueve
tradicionalmente a jóvenes académicos mediante la publicación de tesis doctorales y
posdoctorales destacadas e innovadoras.
La atención se centra en cuestiones de formación teórica, así como en temas históricos y
actuales, con especial énfasis en los siglos XX y XXI, incluyendo temas como el cuerpo,
sexualidad, objetos, instalaciones, muñecos, formas de escenografías, sociedad, historia, teatro
posmoderno y poscolonial, teatro de minorías, performance, formas de transmedialidad,

También es importante la conexión con el espacio público-político-social en interacción con la

académicos que reflejan la amplitud del tema, así como la gama de teorías y temas, y al mismo

transdisciplinar, transcultural e transmedial. Com as suas monografias e antologias sobre uma
vasta gama de temas nos domínios do teatro e da performance latino-americanos, espanhóis,
portugueses e brasileiros, bem como dos estudos de artes visuais, dirige-se tanto a um público
académico como a um público culturalmente interessado. Além disso, a série promove
tradicionalmente os jovens académicos através da publicação de teses de doutoramento e pós-
