This new guide is intended to provide detailed coverage of monographie publications in classical studies during the period 1873-1980. It supplements the existing sources of reference in several ways:
I. by providing a wider chronological range than is currently available for this period within a single printed source;
2. by listing the information in chronological order, so that developments within a specific subject can be traced more easily;
3. by including full details of contents in many instances.
The first part of the work (volumes 1-4) contains descriptions of general subject encyclopaedias and handbooks, and information sources such as survey articles and separately published bibliographies of classical literature; post-classical literature and biblical scholarship are not represented.
The second part contains similar information on language, history, art and archaeology, religion, philosophy and science. Editions, commentaries, monographs and collections such as "Festschriften" or conference proceedings are also listed, with descriptive notes and reprint sources where appropriate. There is a full index of authors, subjects and titles in the final volume.
