Europa steckt nicht nur in einer schweren Wirtschafts-, sondern auch in einer tiefen Sinnkrise. Die Anzahl der Experten, die in dieser Sinn- und Orientierungskrise den Anfang vom Ende Europas sehen, wächst. Will Europa dieses Szenario vermeiden, bedarf es eines radikalen Mentalitätswandels. Im 20. Jahrhundert hat es bereits zwei derartige Mentalitätswandel gegeben. Beide Male ist dem Mentalitätswandel ein fundamentaler Wertewandel vorausgegangen, dessen Schubkraft zu bedeutenden Paradigmenwechseln geführt hat, nämlich: zur Integration Europas und zur Beendigung des Kalten Krieges. Die Frage lautet nun: Was könnte diesmal einen solchen Mentalitätswandel herbeiführen? Die Antwort könnte - wiederum - lauten: eine dezidierte Rückbesinnung auf die so genannten immateriellen Grundlagen Europas. Eine solche Rückbesinnung auf unsere alten Werte könnte dann unter anderem bewirken, dass Europa seine recht unrealistischen Ambitionen (wettbewerbsfähigster wissensbasierter Wirtschaftsraum und politische Weltmacht) aufgibt und sich als moralische Weltmacht im internationalen System etabliert. Der neue Paradigmenwechsel könnte später dann einmal unter der Bezeichnung „Europa - Die Weltmacht der Herzen“ in die Geschichte eingehen.

Europe is suffering not only from an economic crisis but also from an intellectual crisis. To an increasing number of experts this intellectual and directional crisis signals the beginning of the end of Europe. If Europe is to avoid this scenario, a radical change of mentality is needed. In the 20th century two such changes of mentality took place. In both cases this change of mentality was preceded by a fundamental change in values which provided the impetus for a significant paradigm shift: the integration of Europe and the end of the Cold War. The question facing us today is: what could bring about such a change of mentality this time? The answer could - again - be a decisive return to the ‘intangible foundations’ of Europe. Such a return to our old values could mean, among other things, that Europe gives up totally unrealistic ambitions (most competitive knowledge-based economy and political world power) and instead becomes established as a moral world power in the international system. The new paradigm shift might be described by future historians under the rubric: Europe - empire of the heart.
