Die Reihe Collectanea grammatica Latina soll kritische Ausgaben grammatikalischer Werke der Antike und Spätantike aufnehmen, die auf einer neuen Prüfung der Überlieferung beruhen und durch die jeweils am besten geeigneten Interpretationshilfen ergänzt werden. Den Werken, die schon in den Grammatici Latini von H. Keil (1855 - 1880) enthalten waren, werden Texte zur Seite gestellt, die Keil nicht kannte oder die er nicht berücksichtigt hat.
Mallius Theodorus war mit Symmachus und Augustinus befreundet, sein Konsulat im Jahre 399 wurde von dem Dichter Claudianus gepriesen. Sein Traktat De metris ist ein kurzes, schematisches Handbuch, das aber - neben einer gewissen formalen Gesuchtheit - von der Präsenz besonderer wissenschaftlicher Elemente und von einer didaktischen Darstellungsweise gekennzeichnet ist, die ihm weite Verbreitung vor allem im Hochmittelalter gesichert hat. Seit der von H. Keil 1874 (GL VI 585-601) besorgten, nur auf zwei Handschriften beruhenden Ausgabe hat der Text keine philologische Behandlung von Bedeutung mehr erfahren und ist nur selten zum Gegenstand der Forschung geworden.
Francesca Romanini legt in diesem Band eine neue kritische Edition des Traktats De metris vor, die auf der vollständigen und genauen Prüfung der direkten (22 Handschriften) und indirekten Überlieferung basiert. Der Text wird durch eine italienische Übersetzung und philologische Anmerkungen ergänzt. Die ausführliche Einleitung bietet eine Würdigung des Traktats im Rahmen der metrisch-grammatikalischen Lehre der Spätantike.

The aim of the series Collectanea grammatica Latina is to publish grammatical works from classical and late antiquity based on a new examination of the tradition and augmented with the best and most appropriate aids to interpretation. To the works published in H. Keil’s Grammatici Latini (1855-1880) are added texts which Keil either did not know or did not consult.
Mallius Theodorus was a friend of Symmachus and Augustinus; his consulship in 399AD was praised by the poet Claudianus. His treatise De metris is a short, schematic handbook which - despite a certain formal affectation - is characterised by the presence of particular scholarly elements and by a didactic presentation which ensured its wide dissemination, especially in the high middle ages. Since the edition prepared by Keil in 1874 (GL VI 585-601) which was based on only two manuscripts, no significant philological work has been done on the text, and it has seldom been the topic of serious research. In this volume Francesca Romanini presents a new critical edition of the treatise De metris, based on a thorough and precise examination of the direct sources (22 manuscripts) and the indirect ones. The text is accompanied by an Italian translation and philological notes. The comprehensive introduction offers an evaluation of the treatise in the context of the metrical and grammatical theories of late antiquity.
