Der Alphabetische Katalog der Deutschen Staatsbibliothek verzeichnet auf seinen rund 1,1 Millionen Zetteln die gedruckten Musikalien ab 1701 bis zur Gegenwart und die musikwissenschaftliche Literatur, einschließlich Textbüchern und Zeitschriften von 1701-1974. Die internationale Bedeutung der Musikabteilung als einzigartige Sammelstätte der Handschriften Johann Sebastian Bachs, seiner Söhne und Schüler, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts, Joseph Haydns, Ludwig van Beethovens und vieler anderer war bereits im 19. Jahrhundert unbestritten. Der Alphabetische Katalog ist ein Nachweis über den vollständigen Bestand der Bibliothek vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Inzwischen ha er einen einmaligen musikbibliographischen Wert erhalten und repräsentiert ein Stück europäischer und nationaler Musikentwicklung. Gegenwärtig weist der Alphabetische Katalog ca. 320.000 gedruckte Musikalien und 63.000 Musikbücher nach.

On approx. 1.1 m cards, the "Alphabetischer Katalog" (AK) of the "Deutsche Staatsbibliothek" records musik printed from 1701 to the present day and musik literature, including text books and periodicals, published from 1701 to 1974. The international significance of the music department as a unique collection containing the manuscripts of Johann Sebastian Bach, his sons and pupils, Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and many others was uncontested even in the 19th century.x1The "Aphabetischer Katalog" provides evidence of the complete stock of the library before the Second World War. It has now acquired a unique value in terms of music bibliography and represents a piece of European and national musical development. The "Alphabetischer Katalog" currently includes approx. 320.000 pieces of printed music and 63.000 music books.
