Sieben Jahre nach seiner Reise durch Portugal und Marokko publiziert Georg Joseph Vogler sein Choral-System. In ihm fließen Erlebnisse zusammen, die er auf einer Reise nach Nordaf-rika hatte und die ihn dazu bewegten, über die griechischen Modi und die Begleitung des Chorals nachzudenken. Doch die über 100 Seiten starke Publikation ist viel mehr. Sie ist eine Abrechnung mit alten Feinden aus der Musiktheorie und -praxis sowie eine harsche Kritik am musikalischen Leben seiner Zeit. Nicht zuletzt enthält das Choral-System die in der For-schung häufig erwähnten Korrekturen Bachscher Choräle, die nicht unwesentlich an der Ge-nerierung eines pejorativen Bildes Voglers in der Musikgeschichtsschreibung Anteil haben. Mit dem vorliegenden Faksimile des Voglerschen Choral-Systems wird der Öffentlichkeit ein weiteres musiktheoretisches Werk des Abbé zugänglich gemacht, das die Bemühungen um eine ausgewogene Betrachtung der Leistungen des Musiktheoretikers und -praktikers Georg Joseph Vogler in der westeuropäischen Musikgeschichte voranbringen soll.
Begleitet wird diese Publikation durch zwei Aufsätze der Herausgeber zum biografischen Umfeld (Voglers Studienreise nach Portugal und Marokko) sowie zur musiktheoretischen Einordnung des Choral-Systems.

Seven years after his journey through Portugal and Morocco Georg Joseph Vogler published his Choral-System, bringing together his experiences from a journey to North Africa which had moved him to consider Greek modes and the accompaniment of the Chorale. But this work is far more. It is also a settling of scores with old enemies from the fields of musical theory and practice, and a harsh critique of the musical life of its day. Last but not least, it contains the frequently-discussed corrections to Bach’s chorales which have contributed sig-nificantly to the creation of a pejorative image of Vogler in the history of music. This facsim-ile of Vogler’s Choral-System makes another of the Abbé’s works of music theory accessible once again, and should help to promote a more balanced view of Vogler as a theoretical and practical musician. It is accompanied by two essays by the editor on the biographical context (Vogler’s study trips to Portugal and Morocco) and the place of the Choral-System in musical theory.
